Gnocchi with Wild Garlic, Anchovies and Chilli.

I have such a great recipe idea for this wild garlic. Unfortunately the butcher is not open on a Monday and I have the flu anyway so I’m basically just sitting around feeling sorry for myself. This weekend though, I shall be recovered (hopefully), on holiday (double bank holidays rock) and cooking up a storm (on the BBQ).
For now then, this current batch of wild garlic has gone into a plate of comfort gnocchi, along with anchovies, plenty of butter and chilli. Not made by me I hasten to add – I am languishing on the sofa while my very kind other half has rustled it up in well under ten minutes. It tastes like no less than heaven.

Do you grow wild garlic? I can never seem to track it down.
I added gnocchi to my “to cook” list this week, yours looks great.
Hope you feel better soon.

Get better soon! There’s nothing like garlic and chillis to clear the ol’ sinuses out. Never thought to use gnocchi though, I love the stuff. Sooo…filling…

Kerri – No I don’t but I found it easily in Borough Market. I should imagine it will be in lots of food markets as it’s the right time of year. Growing it though, is a fantastic idea! I used to live near a patch not far from where I am now. I could smell it but frustratingly I could never find it.

Wow what fabulous comfort food and just the thing when you are feeling poorly. Lots of antioxidant goodness in the garlic as well.

Long time listener, first time caller (and also a resident of that little enclave around SE15/SE22). Anyway, Riverford have been putting a free pack of wild garlic leaves in with a lot of their boxes over the past few weeks. I used mine to make a wild garlic and walnut pesto last night to go with some linguine, which was quite fab.

Hello Sharmila and thanks for your comment. So how do you find Riverford then? I used to use them when I lived in Oxford but I’ve been using Abel and Cole for years now although I have to say I am a bit bored of their boxes. The fact that RIverford do things like put free wild garlic in their boxes makes me seriously consider changing! The pesto sounds delicious.

Funnily enough, I used to use Abel and Cole, but switched to Riverford a few years ago, as I had a few experiences of not so fresh produce turning up in my Abel and Cole box. I have been very happy with Riverford – I do think the quality of the fruit and veg is great, and I also love their plain yoghurt, which I get every week. Obviously, you don’t have so much scope to omit items you don’t like, but I haven’t found this too much of a problem, and it has meant I have gotten more inventive (the marrow being a particular challenge!). I think it helps that there’s not many vegetables I don’t like.

Thanks Sharmila that’s really helpful. I’m going to have a look at the website now and decide what to do. I’m just getting the fruit box from Abel and Cole at the moment. I’m the same with veg though, there’s nothing I don’t like so that shouldn’t be a problem!

Lucky you! Looks like just the kind of strong, pungent flavours to bust through a flu and still allow you to taste something.

Hopefully you’ll be feeling better soon, otherwise I’ll have to try and figure out how to ship chicken soup overseas. I’m sure there are laws about that…

Looks fantastic, but did it not taste REALLY garlicky? I know those little green shoots are pretty pungent and I thought you didn’t normally have more than 1 or 2?

Hi Chris – no, wild garlic has a much more subtle garlic flavour than ‘normal’ garlic so you can throw in a handful and its not too overpowering.
